We use bridges to quite literally help ‘bridge’ a gap in the mouth. This means they’re used to replace missing teeth, or teeth that need to be extracted due to damage and decay.
Bridges use the surrounding healthy teeth as support for the new, prosthetic tooth or teeth. There are several types of bridge available, some of which also use a frame made of either metal or porcelain which is attached to the back of the support teeth. A cantilever bridge can also be used in cases where there is only one natural tooth available as support. In other cases, we may have to also apply a crown to ensure the stability of the new bridge.
Receiving a bridge is usually accomplished in three stages. We’ll first take an X-ray so that we can thoroughly assess the state and situation of your teeth. You’ll then return to us here at Desford Dental Care for another appointment, during which we’ll prepare your teeth for receiving the bridge. At this point, we may fit you with a temporary bridge. Finally, we will fit you for your permanent bridge, checking for fit, bite, and aesthetics, making sure you’re happy with the result and the final finish before cementing it into place.
This varies from patient to patient, but in some cases, dental bridges can last up to 30 years.
