An inlay is used in the same way as a filling but to repair a tooth with a larger surface area. They are usually applied to the teeth at the back of the mouth which we use for chewing. Like a filling, an inlay will fill the cavity present in the tooth, and we will then bond it into place to help fully restore the tooth while preventing any further damage.
Onlays, like fillings and inlays, are also used to help repair a damaged tooth, but are used to repair the part of the tooth that is visible. This part of the tooth is often referred to as the cusp, and an onlay will sit on this raised part of the tooth, repairing the damage and helping prevent any further damage.
Inlays and onlays can be made from several different materials, including precious metals such as gold. Composite resin has become increasingly popular to use in this treatment, while ceramic/porcelain can also be used – especially for onlays which tend to be more visible.
